But, on this topic, the constituency expecting (demanding, really) a contraction in housing prices seems to have been fairly universal. If prices weren't in a "bubble", then that consensus required an economic dislocation large enough to push home prices down. Oddly, even among observers who might be amenable to my way of thinking, the roadblock for them to accept my hypothesis about the period is that they usually can't accept the idea that optimal policy would have kept housing prices stable. They can't accept the idea that we weren't in a bubble.

2) This reminds me of the debate about whether AI would be dangerous because it would develop a morality that considered humans expendable. Powerful humans tend to consider humans expendable. Powerful humans have tended to kill mass numbers of people. That wouldn't make AI an aberration. It would make AI like us. AI would have to develop a novel morality in order to NOT kill all of us.Kevin Erdmannhttp://idiosyncraticwhisk.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698599151422542939.post-24294646868635819142016-06-09T11:11:55.244-04:002016-06-09T11:11:55.244-04:00If em city-states compete, then those with politic...If em city-states compete, then those with political structures that discourage inefficient policies may lose out. Then, for whatever reason the audience gets a lot bigger. Nerd art has gotten so big it's taken over most of pop culture. And since it's so much bigger, it suddenly starts mattering to the wider culture in ways it never did before. So the apex predators of the culture war show up. Nerds freak out, react in all kinds of overexcited ways, and the Queen of the Jungle rips them to shreds.

There are a some historical and emotional dynamics that contribute to the toxicity.

1) A history of censorship.

Nerds lean libertarian. Especially on free speech issues. And people have shown up before trying to dictate what genre artists are allowed to say.

People remember the comic book code. They remember Jack Thompson and Tipper Gore. Genre fans are on a hair trigger to freak out about censorship.

But all the censorship threats in the past have come from the right. So the libertarian nerds and the leftist nerds were united. The would-be censors of today come from the left, so nerds are split.

2) Nerds hate politics.

People don't retreat into video games or comics to escape from women, they do it to escape from politics. People often get interested in nerdy pursuits in middle school or high school when all their peers are playing this cutthroat status game of coolness and popularity. Nerds are bad at that game, they know they'll lose every time, so they don't want to play.

Fandoms provided a space where nerds felt safe and protected from that stuff. Where they were all just there to share enthusiasm and excitement over something, and nobody was going to get thrown out or ostracized because they fail at some political game that they don't even understand.

Then Anita Sarkeesian shows up and starts calling everyone misogynist basement-dwelling neckbeards and calling all the games sexist and it's like the Mean Girls from your middle school and Jack Thompson all rolled into one. It pushes all the wrong buttons. Nerds go apeshit.Larry D'Annahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18305844431608632835noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698599151422542939.post-2426829832591420092015-09-09T11:17:40.001-04:002015-09-09T11:17:40.001-04:00In far mode you later regret doing more. However, the craftsmen have different skills so the person asking the favor doesn't know how long it really takes (working effectively) to perform. Similarly, with few craftsmen it's hard to determine how much someone values a given repair since the alternative may simply be doing without.

Without a large enough market for their to be multiple suppliers (and buyers) for some kind of good this leaves a very nasty price setting problem. It would require a great deal of thought to determine how much you could charge for a fix. Many mutually beneficial exchanges might not happen because neither party wants to signal to observant 3rd parties that they are willing to flex that much in price (he says he can't do it for any less but I heard he said that to X as well and then did it for 1/2). The cost of this kind of bargaining is probably fairly high relative to any inefficiencies arising from trading favors.

In the long run everyone in the system probably benefits if you could constrain all craftsmen to charge only the true value of the time spent fixing. This is very hard to do with a monetary system as there will be constant pressure to push up prices by a few cents. Favors (viewed as the value of the time invested to do the favor) come in lumpy sizes so it's harder to practically skim off just a little more. Also they invoke a mental context where we feel more motivated by moral virtue than in a bargaining context.TruePathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00124043164362758796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698599151422542939.post-77838407958024819062015-07-20T08:09:12.618-04:002015-07-20T08:09:12.618-04:00Everyone has his own view of stock market. Laws are int...That's bullshit and you know it. Laws are interpreted by judges not computers and everyone knows the intended meaning of sexual orientation in this context refers to the *gender* of your preferred sexual partner.

However, I actually think that buisnesses (indeed any establishment holding itself out as open to the general public) should not be able to deny service based on any characteristics not mandated by law, motivated by concerns of fraud/damage, or stemming from past buisness interactions with that individual. Why?

Well let's consider what made racism so bad we needed laws to stop it. If some people had simply, following their own conscience, decided not to serve blacks their competitors would have taken care of the problem. The pernicious facet of the problem is the public pressure to comply with community moral standard. As long as you will lose more money to a boycott then you will gain by serving a disfavored group it isn't in your economic interests to serve them.

As long as we are relatively anonymous this is no big deal. Apart from visible features like race and gender that are already legally protected anyone (even a pederast) can go into a big box store and buy what they need. In the not so distant future facial recognition, cell phone features and other tech will likely expose your identity to any store you enter. How long will it be before someone gets the bright idea of creating an online list of child molesters and encourages people to boycott any store serving them. Someone ends up on that list mistakenly (or even deservedly for a past crime they have served their time for) and they may well find themselves unable to buy any food, order any books, watch any paid internet content.

This may sound very restrictive of the rights of businesses (and their owners) but if you think about it we already heavily restrict their rights of conscience. In a libertarian utopia the catholic hardware store could demand contractual guarantee that no tools bought from it would be used in the construction or maintenance of an abortion clinic and any subsequent buyer must also be so bound. We don't allow such restrictive contracts governing use of purchases (except sometimes software) because we feel retail sales only get to propose or deny a purchase not offer an arbitrary contract. All I'm suggesting is that we further narrow the scope to say that retail buisnesses may only propose a transaction to all parties or to none.

I realize there is a potential high cost of compliance. To this end I would only allow lawsuits to succeed if they can show the business actively sought out or maintained a database for the purpose of illegally denying service to certain individuals.

I don't like the restriction on liberty but it's a damn sight less invasive than what we would need to do to enforce a right of privacy.TruePathhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00124043164362758796noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698599151422542939.post-58634716265437594142015-06-18T05:36:31.545-04:002015-06-18T05:36:31.545-04:00Price is very affordable only if the services are ...Price is very affordable only if the services are worth enough for the pay.Stock tipshttp://www.epicresearch.co/equity/stock-tipsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698599151422542939.post-46561825147175909652015-06-17T04:03:14.698-04:002015-06-17T04:03:14.698-04:00The main success of economists is apparently their...The main success of economists is apparently their self-confidence in putting forth their expert claims.
Stock tipshttp://www.epicresearch.co/equity/stock-tipsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698599151422542939.post-50719993380185931522015-06-17T04:02:03.587-04:002015-06-17T04:02:03.587-04:00You don’t want to overpower the scene with similes...You don’t want to overpower the scene with similes, but creating a couple can make all the difference to your details.Nifty Futures Tipshttp://www.epicresearch.co/derivatives/nifty-futures-tipsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5698599151422542939.post-73323326113266331422015-06-08T12:45:47.474-04:002015-06-08T12:45:47.474-04:00Hi guys,
